Why this is the #1 buyer objection in Calgary
Almost every Calgary homeowner I sit down with raises some version of this question within the first 15 minutes. "Where does the screen go if the window swings inward?" Or: "My kids' bedrooms can't have windows that open all the way." Or: "The bedroom code in Alberta needs a certain opening — does this comply?"
The objection makes sense on the surface. Every North American window the buyer has ever lived with had the screen mounted on the interior side of the frame, because the sash either slid horizontally past a screen or opened outward (casement). The mental model says: a window that opens inward must collide with the screen. That model is correct for North American windows. It is exactly backward for European ones.
How screens actually mount on a tilt-and-turn window
The frame on a European tilt-and-turn has a dedicated screen channel running around the exterior perimeter, recessed roughly 20-25mm from the outside face. The screen attaches to that channel from outside, sitting between the brickmould or stucco return and the operable sash. The sash itself opens to the interior — into your living space — and never touches the screen.
This is the standard configuration in Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt — every European city where these windows have been the residential default for 40+ years. There are tens of millions of homes living this way. The screen-on-exterior arrangement is the original engineering, not a North American workaround.
Three screen options that work on REHAU systems
Fixed-frame aluminum screen. A rigid frame with fine mesh, clipped into the exterior screen channel. Removable for cleaning twice a year, but otherwise stays in place. Lowest cost, highest visibility from outside. The right call for most upper-floor bedrooms and any opening where the screen rarely needs to come off.
Roll-up cassette screen. A small horizontal cassette mounts above the opening (or below for vertical pull) and holds a roll of mesh that pulls down into the frame channel and clips at the sill. Lift to retract. The right call for ground-floor openings adjacent to a deck or patio where the screen has to come and go without tools.
Retractable side-pull screen. A vertical cassette mounts on one jamb, the mesh pulls horizontally across, and a magnetic strip holds it closed against the opposite jamb. Invisible when retracted. The right call for statement windows or feature openings where a visible screen frame would interrupt the architecture — for example, the great-room window wall on an acreage build near Calgary.
Calgary note
Roll-up cassette screens are the only type that fully retract — meaning when the snow is on the ground and the bugs are gone for the season, you can pull them out of the sightline entirely. Three of my recent inner-city Calgary heritage clients prefer this for their main-floor reception rooms specifically because of that.
Ventilation modes: tilt vs turn
A tilt-and-turn window has two operating positions. The handle controls which one is active.
Tilt mode (handle pointing up). The sash opens inward roughly 10-15° at the top, with the bottom edge held in place by hinge pins. You get a controlled vent at the top of the opening — air comes in, but the clear opening at the sash edge is small (typically 12-18cm at the top in a 1.2m-tall sash). This is the night-ventilation mode. It's also the child-safe mode by default: a small child cannot get through the gap because the bottom rail is still secured to the sill.
Turn mode (handle pointing horizontal). The sash rotates inward on side hinges, opening fully — same as a door. You get the full clear pass of the opening for ventilation, escape, or cleaning. This is the mode that satisfies bedroom egress code and the mode you use for moving furniture in or out.
The third position — handle pointing down — is the locked position, with the sash compressed against the EPDM gasket at all eight or so locking cam points. Both ventilation modes are accessed by lifting the handle out of locked; you cannot accidentally engage turn mode while leaving the handle in tilt position.
Child lock options: restrictor + key-lock handle
Two hardware additions handle child safety, and they work together.
The first is a restrictor hinge. The standard turn-mode hinge swings the sash through a roughly 100° arc. A restrictor hinge replaces the standard top hinge with a version that mechanically limits the swing — typically capping the sash opening at a clear gap of 6cm at the lock-side edge. That's enough air to vent the room. It is not enough for a child to climb through. The restrictor releases with a key or a hidden latch when adult-supervised access is needed.
The second is a key-operated handle. The standard tilt-and-turn handle rotates freely between locked, tilt, and turn positions. The key-operated version requires a key to move from locked into either ventilation position. With the key removed, the window cannot be opened by a child reaching the handle from a chair or step stool.
Either hardware option is available as a factory configuration on REHAU systems and adds modestly to the per-opening cost — typically $40-90 per window depending on the line. REHAU North America publishes the hardware specifications for each profile; the relevant options are listed under "egress and child-safety hardware" in the technical bulletins.
Practical pattern
What I recommend for most Calgary families with young kids: restrictor hinges on bedroom windows used for nighttime ventilation, key-operated handles on any window where the latch is reachable from a piece of furniture. Standard hardware everywhere else. There's no need to pay for child-safety hardware on a kitchen casement above a 36-inch counter.
Alberta Building Code §9.7 egress: how tilt-and-turn complies
Alberta Building Code §9.7 (sleeping rooms) requires that every bedroom have at least one openable window meeting minimum egress dimensions. The current standard is an openable area of 0.35 m² minimum, with no dimension less than 380mm, openable without tools or special knowledge, and held open without a separate support device. The full reference is in the National Building Code – Alberta Edition, Part 9.
Tilt-and-turn windows comply when the opening size meets the dimensional minimum. The full inward swing of the sash provides the openable area; the handle is the single-action operation; the hinges hold the sash open without a prop. In practice this means any tilt-and-turn opening above roughly 600 × 900mm clear comfortably meets §9.7 — which covers virtually every bedroom window we install.
The visit checks this on every bedroom opening before the quote is written. If an existing rough opening is undersized for code (some 1970s Calgary basements have bedroom openings that fail the current minimum), we flag it and quote the rough-opening rework separately. The window itself is not the bottleneck.
Honest call
If the screen-and-child-lock concern is the one thing keeping you from European windows, it shouldn't be. The hardware solves both, well, at modest cost. Spend the worry budget on whether you're staying in the house 10+ years — that's the question that decides whether European is the right call.
What this looks like in a Calgary install
On a typical Calgary renovation with two kids in bedrooms upstairs: fixed-frame aluminum screens on all upper windows, restrictor hinges on the two kids' rooms, standard hardware on the primary bedroom (the egress window code-required there benefits from full-open access). Main-floor great room: roll-up cassette screens on the operable units, no screen on the fixed picture units. Total screen + child-safety upcharge across a 25-window full-house: typically $1,200-2,000 added to the project. Less than the project-level rounding error in most cases.
